Best Bachelor’s Degree for School Counselors: Top Majors and Schools

Written by School-Counselor.org Editorial Staff, Last Updated: October 8, 2026

There’s no single best bachelor’s degree for school counselors. Psychology, education, social work, sociology, human development and human services all prepare you well. Next comes a master’s in school counseling. CACREP’s 2024 standards set a 60-semester-credit minimum, and your state sets its own certification requirements.

Jada is a college sophomore with a major to declare by spring. She loved intro psych. She’s also spent two summers running a day camp and wonders if education is the smarter pick. Her real question is simpler: will the wrong choice lock her out of school counseling later?

It won’t. Your bachelor’s degree matters less than most people think. Here’s what each major gives you, what master’s programs look for, and 10 universities that offer both degrees.

Can You Be a School Counselor With a Bachelor’s Degree?

Not as a certified school counselor. In most states, full certification requires a master’s in school counseling and supervised fieldwork. Depending on your state, you may also need to pass an exam, take extra coursework and clear a background check. Your state’s education or educator certification agency issues the credential, not your university. Your bachelor’s gets you into the master’s program. The full path to becoming a school counselor covers every step after that.

Some districts do hire bachelor’s-level staff for college and career advising or paraprofessional roles. That’s good experience, but it isn’t a school counseling job and doesn’t count toward certification.

Does Your Major Matter for a Master’s in School Counseling?

Less than you’d expect. The 2024 CACREP Standards govern accredited counseling programs. They ask programs to weigh factors like aptitude for graduate-level study. A specific undergraduate major isn’t one of them.

Individual programs add their own rules, and that’s where coursework matters. Minnesota State University, Mankato (CACREP-accredited through October 2033) requires Abnormal Psychology before or during your first year. It says applicants with a 2.75 GPA or higher are most competitive. It also asks for references, a personal statement and a resume.

Best Bachelor’s Degrees for Future School Counselors

Each of these majors gives you a different head start. None of them is required, and each leaves a gap you can fill before you apply.

Psychology

Psychology lines up most directly with a counseling master’s. Developmental psychology, abnormal psychology and personality theory all come back at the graduate level in more depth. A psych degree also covers prerequisites like Mankato’s Abnormal Psychology requirement.

So yes, you can become a school counselor with a bachelor’s in psychology. You’ll still need the master’s. The usual gap is school experience, so a psych major who’s never worked with kids should fix that before applying.

Torn between the two careers? Our school counselor vs. school psychologist comparison shows where the paths split.

Education

An education degree gives you something no other major does: time in front of a classroom. You learn how teachers plan and how a school day actually runs. That helps when you’re the counselor trying to get a teacher on board with a student’s plan.

In some states it also smooths the path. Missouri State University says Missouri certification requires either a teaching certificate or three additional education courses. It also lists the Missouri Educator Gateway Assessment (MEGA) for Student Services-Counselor as a required exam. Kansas takes a different approach. It allows school counselor licensure without a teaching license, but applicants without one meet additional supervised field-experience requirements. Those requirements differ by license pathway.

These rules change. Texas required two years of classroom teaching until the Texas Education Agency dropped it, effective September 1, 2023. Check your state’s education or educator certification agency before assuming either way. Our breakdown of what each state requires from your master’s program is a good place to start. The trade-off with an education major is fewer psychology courses, so you may need a prerequisite or two.

Social Work

Social work trains you to see a student as part of a family and a community. You learn case management and how to connect people with resources. Those skills come up constantly with students facing housing instability or a family crisis.

Social work also keeps a second door open: school social work, a related role with its own credential. Add a psychology or counseling theory course to round out the one-on-one side.

Sociology

Sociology explains the forces outside the counseling office: poverty, family structure, inequality, how schools sort students. That lens helps when you’re trying to figure out why a capable student is checking out. You’ll also get solid research training. Pair it with developmental and abnormal psychology electives so you’re covered for prerequisites.

Human Development and Family Studies

Human development and family studies (HDFS) looks at how children and teens grow and how families shape that growth. It maps closely to the human development course in a school counseling program. If your program offers a practicum with children or teens, take it.

Human Services

Human services is the most hands-on of the group, built around helping skills, case work and agency field placements.

You might wonder whether there’s a bachelor’s in school counseling itself. There isn’t one that leads to certification. Certification is built on a graduate degree, so a bachelor’s with “counseling” in the title won’t qualify you alone. Human services is about as close as undergrad gets.

Don’t see your major here? That’s fine. People come into school counseling from business, English and STEM fields. Take a psychology course or two and get experience with young people before you apply. Programs want evidence you can do this work, not a particular diploma.

How to Make the Most of Your Undergraduate Years

Whatever your major, these choices strengthen your master’s application:

  • Developmental psychology: You’ll work with kids from kindergarten through 12th grade. Knowing what’s typical at each age is the baseline.
  • Abnormal psychology: Some programs require it as a prerequisite, so it’s worth taking early.
  • Statistics or research methods: Your master’s will include research and program evaluation coursework.
  • Experience with young people: Tutoring, camp, mentoring, coaching and resident advisor work all count. Crisis line volunteering shows you can handle hard conversations.
  • Relationships with professors: Mankato wants at least one recommendation from an instructor or academic advisor. Go to office hours so someone can write a specific letter.

Already sure school counseling is the goal? Some universities let undergrads start graduate coursework early. Our guide to accelerated bachelor’s-to-master’s counseling pathways explains how they work.

Jada ended up choosing psychology. She’s keeping the day camp job, too. Both will show up on her application.

Best Universities to Start Your Bachelor’s for a School Counseling Career

The easiest path runs through one campus. At each university below, you can earn a bachelor’s in a relevant major. Then you can stay for a CACREP-accredited school counseling master’s. Staying put means professors who already know your work, a program you’ve seen up close, and no relocation between degrees.

How we chose these universities: Every school counseling program here is accredited by CACREP. We verified each against the CACREP register on September 30, 2026. Any program whose CACREP status shows a teach-out, closure, show-cause or withdrawal is excluded. We started with campus-based programs in our database and left out those recorded as online, because the point is one campus. We then took the 10 largest by 2023 master’s graduates. Those counts come from the federal IPEDS survey, CIP code 13.1101. That count measures size, not quality, and it covers the whole university. We skipped William & Mary, whose on-campus track isn’t accepting applications for 2026-27. Each university offers at least one of the majors covered above, confirmed on official program listings. Universities are listed alphabetically, not ranked. CACREP accreditation is not the same as state approval, so check the requirements in the state where you plan to work.

Alfred University: M.S.Ed. in School Counseling

Best for: Students who want a small private campus and real counseling practice as undergraduates

Relevant majors: Psychology
School counseling degree: M.S.Ed., 60 credits
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2032 (Progress Report Required)

Alfred’s psychology major is built with helping careers in mind. Its undergraduate handbook describes supervised counseling skills training and coursework that prepares students for clinical, counseling and child development paths.

One detail stands out for future school counselors. Alfred gives psychology seniors the chance to provide peer counseling to first-year students. That’s real helping experience before you apply to a master’s program, and the school counseling M.S.Ed. is on the same campus.

Kean University: M.A. in Counseling, School Counseling

Best for: New Jersey students choosing between psychology, sociology and social work who want a flexible master’s schedule

Location: Union, NJ  |  Type: Public  |  Master’s Graduates (2023): 67
Relevant majors: Psychology, sociology, social work (BSW)
School counseling degree: M.A., 60 credits, weeknight and weekend classes
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through March 31, 2030

Kean offers three of the majors covered above as bachelor’s degrees: psychology, sociology and social work. Its psychology program covers human behavior, development, relationships, mental health and addiction.

The master’s is built around working schedules. Classes at the Union campus meet on weeknights, with some Saturday and Sunday courses. Kean Ocean runs a part-time version with most classes on weekends.

Kean also offers a School Counseling with LPC Qualification option. Kean says graduates of that option earn school counselor certification and meet Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) requirements. Its Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is CACREP-accredited through March 31, 2030.

Montclair State University: M.A. in Counseling, School Counseling

Best for: Students who want a school-focused family science major on the way to a large school counseling program

Location: Montclair, NJ  |  Type: Public  |  Master’s Graduates (2023): 104
Relevant majors: Family science and human development, psychology, sociology
School counseling degree: M.A., mostly evening classes
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2033 (Progress Report Required)

Montclair has the closest thing on this list to a school counseling warm-up major. Its BA in Family Science and Human Development offers a concentration in Families, Children and School Settings. New Jersey’s program inventory also lists Montclair bachelor’s degrees in psychology and sociology.

Montclair reported more school counseling master’s graduates in 2023 than any other university here, with 104. That’s a size measure, not a ranking. Most counseling courses meet in the evenings, and both full-time and part-time study are available.

Sacramento State: M.S. in Counseling, School Counseling

Best for: California students who want a child development major and a built-in path to the PPS credential

Location: Sacramento, CA  |  Type: Public  |  Master’s Graduates (2023): 85
Relevant majors: Psychology, sociology, family studies and human development, child and adolescent development
School counseling degree: M.S., 60 credits, with an embedded PPS credential
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through March 31, 2029 (Progress Report Required)

Sacramento State gives you more developmental majors than most universities. Alongside psychology and sociology, it offers a BS in Family Studies and Human Development. It also offers a BA in Child and Adolescent Development. That major has Educational Contexts and Social and Community Contexts concentrations, and the second builds fieldwork hours into the major.

The payoff comes at the master’s level. Sacramento State’s school counseling M.S. embeds the Pupil Personnel Services (PPS) credential, which California requires for public school counselors.

The College of New Jersey: M.A. in School Counseling

Best for: Psychology students who want the fastest same-campus route into school counseling

Location: Ewing, NJ  |  Type: Public  |  Master’s Graduates (2023): 71
Relevant majors: Psychology, including a three-year BA
School counseling degree: M.A., 60 credits
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2030

TCNJ links its undergraduate and graduate programs more tightly than any other school on this list. Students in its accelerated three-year psychology BA can move straight into the school counseling MA. They finish the bachelor’s in May of their third year and start graduate courses that June.

The MA prepares counselors to work across the preK-12 range. TCNJ also offers summer courses through an International School Counseling Program in Portugal. If you finish a bachelor’s somewhere else, the MA is open as a stand-alone program too.

University of Colorado Colorado Springs: M.A. in Counseling, School Counseling

Best for: Colorado students who want to combine psychology and sociology

Location: Colorado Springs, CO  |  Type: Public  |  Master’s Graduates (2023): 70
Relevant majors: Psychology, sociology, and a dual psychology and sociology BA
School counseling degree: M.A., 60 credits
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through March 31, 2033

UCCS lets you double up. Its dual BA in psychology and sociology pairs two of the majors covered above in one degree. Psychology classes in that program meet in person, and sociology classes can be taken in person or online.

UCCS is also honest about what a bachelor’s can and can’t do. Its psychology department notes that the BA isn’t an applied program, and that counseling careers need more training after graduation. That training is available on the same campus.

University of Central Florida: M.A./M.Ed. in Counselor Education, School Counseling

Best for: Florida students who want research-focused social science training at a large university

Location: Orlando, FL  |  Type: Public  |  Master’s Graduates (2023): 69
Relevant majors: Psychology, sociology
School counseling degree: M.A. or M.Ed., 60 credits
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2030

UCF’s sociology major leans into research. Required courses include social theory, applied social statistics, research methods and data analysis. Majors can also intern with local agencies for credit. Psychology is offered through the same College of Sciences.

That grounding fits school counseling, where counselors use data to plan and evaluate their programs. UCF’s school counseling master’s is available as an M.A. or an M.Ed.

UNC Charlotte: M.A. in Counseling, School Counseling

Best for: North Carolina students deciding between social work and child development

Location: Charlotte, NC  |  Type: Public  |  Master’s Graduates (2023): 69
Relevant majors: Social work (BSW), child and family development
School counseling degree: M.A., 60 credits, daytime and evening classes
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2034

UNC Charlotte covers two of the majors above directly. It offers a Bachelor of Social Work and a BA in Child and Family Development. The child development degree sits in the Cato College of Education.

The school counseling master’s offers daytime and evening classes. UNC Charlotte says teaching experience isn’t required for admission, or for North Carolina school counselor licensure. Its CACREP accreditation runs to October 31, 2034, the longest current cycle on this list.

University of North Texas: M.Ed./M.S. in School Counseling

Best for: Texas students who want a human development major in the same college as the master’s

Location: Denton, TX  |  Type: Public  |  Master’s Graduates (2023): 68
Relevant majors: Human development and family science
School counseling degree: M.Ed. or M.S., 60 credits
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through March 31, 2028 (Reaffirmation in Process)

UNT’s BS in Human Development and Family Science sits in the College of Education’s Department of Educational Psychology. It offers two concentrations: Individual and Family Development Across the Lifespan, and Community and Family Services.

That puts HDFS students in the same college that runs UNT’s school counseling master’s. It’s a natural fit if you’re drawn to child development but don’t want a teaching major.

Good to know: This program’s CACREP accreditation cycle ends March 31, 2028, and reaffirmation is in process. Ask where it stands before you apply.

Wayne State University: M.A. in Counseling, School Counseling

Best for: Detroit-area students who want the option of a combined school and clinical counseling degree

Location: Detroit, MI  |  Type: Public  |  Master’s Graduates (2023): 61
Relevant majors: Psychology, social work, sociology
School counseling degree: M.A., 60 credits (71 for the combined track)
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2032

Wayne State’s College of Liberal Arts and Sciences lists psychology, social work and sociology among its social science majors. That’s three of the six majors covered above at one urban research university.

At the master’s level, Wayne State offers a combined School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling track at 71 credit hours. Its Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2032. That’s worth knowing if you want the option of working outside a school later.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a bachelor’s degree in school counseling?

Not one that leads to certification. School counseling certification is built on a graduate degree, so you’ll need a master’s no matter what you study first. Human services and psychology are the closest undergraduate options.

Can I become a school counselor with a bachelor’s in psychology?

Yes. Psychology is one of the strongest foundations for a school counseling master’s. You’ll still need the master’s degree, supervised fieldwork and your state’s certification. Your psych coursework may already cover prerequisites like abnormal psychology.

Is psychology or education better for school counseling?

It depends on your strengths and your state. Psychology builds the counseling knowledge you’ll use daily. Education builds classroom experience and can help in states like Missouri, which requires a teaching certificate or additional education courses. Pick the major you’ll do well in, since your GPA matters for admission.

Can I become a school counselor with an unrelated bachelor’s degree?

Yes. Many master’s programs accept applicants from any field. You may need prerequisites like abnormal psychology, and you’ll want experience working with kids or teens before you apply.

How long does it take to become a school counselor after a bachelor’s?

Under the 2024 CACREP Standards, programs require at least 60 semester credits (or 90 quarter credits). Some require more. Full-time students often finish in about two to three years. Part-time students take longer. Your state’s certification steps come next, which may include an exam, a background check and other documentation. Some exams can be taken before you graduate.

Key Takeaways
  • No required major: Psychology, education, social work, sociology, HDFS and human services all prepare you well.
  • The master’s is the core step: CACREP’s 2024 standards set a 60-semester-credit minimum, and your state adds its own requirements.
  • Check prerequisites early: Some programs require courses like abnormal psychology before or during your first year.
  • State rules shift: Missouri still values a teaching background, while Texas dropped its teaching-experience requirement in 2023.
  • One campus can cover both degrees: The 10 universities above pair relevant bachelor’s majors with a CACREP-accredited school counseling master’s.

If you’re comparing master’s programs, start with the state where you plan to practice. Requirements vary, and your program should line up with that state’s certification process before you enroll.
