Evening and Weekend School Counseling Programs for Working Teachers

Written by School-Counselor.org Editorial Staff, Last Updated: October 7, 2026

We’ve confirmed 48 CACREP-accredited school counseling programs whose own pages say classes meet in the evening or on weekends. That’s a scheduling fact only. The 600-hour internship generally needs substantial time in K-12 schools while students are present, which can conflict with a teaching schedule, so ask each program how students manage it.

Dana teaches seventh-grade science. Her last bell rings at 3:10, and she has hall duty twice a week. She’s wanted to become a school counselor since a student lingered after class to ask who she could talk to about stress at home. Then Dana finds a program with a weekly seminar at 10 a.m. That means a sub plan, a lost day, and a hard question about how long she can keep doing it. A class that starts at 4:30 or 7:00 is a different conversation.

That’s the gap this page is meant to close. Below you’ll find programs that say, on their own websites, that classes meet in the evening or on weekends. Each one gets a profile. It covers when classes meet, how the program is accredited, and what a teacher should ask before calling admissions.

What “Evening or Weekend” Means Here

We claim one thing about every program on this list: its own page says classes are scheduled in the evening or at weekends. We recorded the sentence and the date we checked it.

We don’t claim more than that. A few boundaries matter.

It doesn’t mean part-time. Some programs on the list say full-time and part-time study are both available. Others don’t say. Credit load, length and pace vary, so ask each program what a realistic schedule looks like.

It doesn’t mean online. Several of these programs also describe online or hybrid courses. We confirmed digital delivery through accreditation-related records for only one program, Marshall University. For the rest, online is the university’s own description, so ask how many courses actually meet online and when.

It doesn’t mean every class is at night. Some programs offer day and evening sections side by side. A few meet on a Saturday or a single weekend each month. The schedule column in the table and each profile use the program’s own wording so you can see the difference.

It also doesn’t mean the list is complete. Only programs already carrying the evening or weekend tag were checked. A program that offers night classes but was never tagged can’t appear here, which is why we say “programs we have confirmed” throughout.

The Internship Is the Hard Part

Evening coursework solves the class schedule. It doesn’t solve the internship.

A CACREP-accredited school counseling program includes a supervised internship of 600 hours after practicum, with at least 240 of those hours in direct service. School counseling internships generally require substantial hours in K-12 school settings while students and school personnel are present, which can conflict with a full-time teaching schedule. Exact scheduling and placement rules vary by program and state. A teacher can’t be in her own classroom and in a counselor’s office at the same time.

So before you apply, ask each program direct questions:

  • Where do students complete the internship, and who arranges the placement?
  • Can the internship happen at your current school or district, or does it have to be somewhere else?
  • How do students who work full time usually handle the 600 hours?
  • Does the program offer any flexibility in how the hours are spread across semesters?

The answers will tell you more about whether a program fits your life than the class schedule will. If you want a closer look at the fieldwork, read our guide to what a school counseling internship involves.

Read the schedule column closely. Southeastern Louisiana, UNC Charlotte, UT Knoxville and Western Carolina offer evening classes alongside day classes. You may not be able to take every course at night. City University of Seattle, Indiana State, Oregon State and Wayne State work differently. They meet on weekends or in periodic on-campus sessions rather than on a regular evening schedule. Oregon State’s sessions include Fridays.

Sixteen of these programs carry an accreditation status other than plain Accredited. We’ve printed CACREP’s label and cycle end date for each, with no added interpretation. Five are Accredited (Reaffirmation in Process). Bowling Green State University, DePaul University, St. John’s University and Trinity Washington University each have a cycle end date of March 31, 2027. Hood College’s is October 31, 2027.

Eleven are Accredited (Progress Report Required), with these cycle end dates:

  • Duquesne University: April 30, 2034
  • John Carroll University: October 31, 2029
  • Loyola University Maryland: March 31, 2029
  • Marshall University: April 30, 2034
  • Montclair State University: October 31, 2033
  • Ohio State University: October 31, 2033

  • University of Toledo: October 31, 2029
  • University of Wisconsin – River Falls: October 31, 2032
  • Wichita State University: October 31, 2029

Confirm any program’s current status on the CACREP register before you apply.

How this list was built. Every program here is accredited by CACREP as a School Counseling program, verified against the CACREP register on September 30, 2026. Any program whose CACREP status shows a teach-out, closure, show-cause or withdrawal is excluded, because a reader cannot reliably enroll in it. Programs are listed alphabetically, not ranked. Each program’s own page states that classes are scheduled in the evening or at weekends, and we recorded the sentence and the date we checked it. That is a statement about when classes meet, not about part-time study, online delivery or keeping a job. Coursework scheduling is not the whole picture. School counseling internships generally require substantial hours in K-12 school settings while students and school personnel are present, which can conflict with a full-time teaching schedule. Exact scheduling and placement rules vary by program and state. Ask each program how its students manage that alongside work. Other details in the profiles come from the same program pages and were also checked on October 5, 2026. These include teaching-license requirements and dual tracks. Admission policies change often, so confirm them with the program. This list covers the programs we have confirmed, not every program that may offer evening or weekend classes. CACREP accreditation is not the same as state approval: check your own state board’s requirements for school counselor certification before you enroll.

Evening and Weekend School Counseling Program Profiles

Programs are listed alphabetically. Each profile starts with the teacher it fits best, then covers the schedule and accreditation, then adds what to ask before you apply. Where a profile mentions licensure, it applies to the state named. Other states set their own rules.

Augusta University (M.Ed.)

Best for: Teachers near Augusta who want evening classes taught mostly in person

Location: Augusta, GA
Class schedule: Almost exclusively evenings, with most classes face-to-face
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2031

Augusta’s page says courses run almost exclusively in the evenings, and most classes are held face-to-face. If you’d rather sit in a campus classroom after the school day than log in from your kitchen, the format is straightforward. This public university’s M.Ed. has been CACREP-accredited since 2005.

Good to know: Face-to-face means a weeknight commute, so map the drive before you apply.

Bowling Green State University (M.Ed.)

Best for: Teachers in the Bowling Green area who want most of their classes after the school day

Location: Bowling Green, OH
Class schedule: Most classes held in the evening
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through March 31, 2027 (Reaffirmation in Process)

Bowling Green says most of its classes are held in the evening. The M.Ed. is offered at a public university and has been CACREP-accredited since 2009.

Good to know: Ask which required courses fall outside the evening block. The current cycle ends March 31, 2027 and reaffirmation is in process, so ask where it stands before you apply.

Bridgewater State University (M.Ed.)

Best for: Massachusetts teachers who want an evening schedule and a clear two-year timeline

Location: Bridgewater, MA
Class schedule: Most courses taught in the evenings
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through March 31, 2032

Most courses at Bridgewater are taught in the evenings, and the university says you can finish in as little as two years. This public university has held CACREP accreditation for its M.Ed. since 2006.

Good to know: “As little as two years” is the fastest pace, not a promise. Ask what a plan that fits a full teaching load looks like.

Capital University (M.Ed.)

Best for: Teachers near Columbus who want evening-only classes with a predictable start time

Location: Columbus, OH
Class schedule: All classes in the evening, beginning at 4:30 p.m., with at most two classes on a single evening
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2031

Capital’s page says every class is offered in the evening, beginning at 4:30 p.m., with no more than two on a single night. The university says the evening schedule is meant to accommodate practicum and internship. This private nonprofit program has been CACREP-accredited since 2022.

Capital also offers a dual track, so students can complete both the school counseling and clinical mental health counseling programs if they want to. Capital’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2031.

Location: Mt. Pleasant, MI
Class schedule: Afternoons and evenings, with many classes online
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2029

Central Michigan says classes take place in the afternoons and evenings, and many are online. Its page also describes a combined option. Because students complete the coursework and internships required for both concentrations, that path runs longer than the single-track program.

The program has held CACREP accreditation since 2019. Central Michigan’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2029.

Good to know: The online classes are the university’s description, not something we’ve confirmed through accreditation records.

City University of Seattle (M.A.)

Best for: Seattle-area teachers who would rather give up Saturdays than weeknights

Location: Seattle, WA
Class schedule: Certain classes meet in person on Saturdays, with schedules set by cohort
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through March 31, 2032

CityU says certain classes meet in person on Saturdays and tells applicants to talk to an advisor about the current schedule for their cohort. That wording means Saturdays may not be the whole picture. It’s a private nonprofit institution, and the program has been CACREP-accredited since 2019.

Good to know: Ask how many classes meet in person on Saturdays and what the rest of the schedule looks like.

Duquesne says you have the option of taking classes in the late afternoon and early evening. Its page says the program meets the academic requirements for Pennsylvania LPC licensure as well as Pennsylvania school counseling certification. Those requirements are specific to Pennsylvania.

The program has held CACREP accreditation since 1991. Duquesne’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is CACREP-accredited through April 30, 2034 (Progress Report Required).

Good to know: The late-afternoon and early-evening classes are an option, not a promise that every course meets then.

Emporia State University (M.S.)

Best for: Kansas teachers and career changers who want live early-evening classes and no GRE

Location: Emporia, KS
Class schedule: Synchronous classes in the early evenings
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2030

Emporia State holds synchronous classes in the early evenings. Its page says the program provides pathways toward Kansas school counselor licensure and Kansas LPC licensure. Candidates without a teaching license can enter through the Kansas Direct Entry pathway, which carries additional field-experience requirements.

The page also says neither the GRE nor the MAT is required for admission. It’s a public university, and the program has been CACREP-accredited since 1996. Emporia State’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2030.

Good to know: Synchronous means live, so plan to be online at set times. The no-teaching-license route is a Kansas pathway, not a universal rule.

Fort Valley State University (M.S.Ed.)

Best for: Georgia teachers who want evening classes at a historically Black university

Location: Fort Valley, GA
Class schedule: Evenings, with blended synchronous and in-person classes held at the Warner Robins Center

Fort Valley State holds its evening classes, both blended synchronous and in person, at the Warner Robins Center. It’s a public, historically Black university, and the program has been CACREP-accredited since 2011.

CACREP has accredited the program, at a private nonprofit institution, since 2018. Hood’s Clinical Mental Health Counseling program is CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2027 (Reaffirmation in Process).

Good to know: The current cycle ends October 31, 2027 and reaffirmation is in process, so ask where it stands before you apply.

Location: Moorhead, MN
Class schedule: All Counseling program courses offered after 4:30 p.m.
Accreditation: CACREP-accredited through October 31, 2032

How to Choose a Program If You’re Still Teaching

Start with the state where you plan to practice. Certification is decided by your state, not by the program, so a program in another state may not line up with your state’s process. Check your state’s certification requirements before you narrow the list.

Then separate two questions that are easy to blur. Whether a program admits you is one. Whether your state asks for classroom experience before it certifies you is another. Check both.

This list doesn’t tell you anything about cost or how long a program takes. If cost is the deciding factor, our guide to paying for a school counseling master’s covers funding. If the GRE is the obstacle, our list of programs that don’t require the GRE is a separate filter. And if speed matters most, the fastest school counseling programs page compares timelines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are evening and weekend programs the same as part-time programs?

No. Evening and weekend describes when classes meet. It says nothing about how many credits you take at once or how long the degree runs. Some programs on this list say both full-time and part-time study are available. Ask the program what a typical part-time schedule looks like.

Can I keep teaching full time during the internship?

School counseling internships generally require substantial hours in K-12 school settings while students and school personnel are present, which can conflict with a full-time teaching schedule. Exact scheduling and placement rules vary by program and state. That makes a full-time teaching job hard to combine with the 600 hours. Ask each program how students who work full time handle it, and whether a placement at your current school is possible.

Is a program on this list approved for certification in my state?

Not necessarily. CACREP accreditation is a national program standard, and it isn’t the same as state approval. Your state’s board or department of education decides who can be certified. Check its requirements before you enroll.

Why isn’t my program on this list?

We only include programs we have confirmed. A program that offers evening or weekend classes but wasn’t already tagged hasn’t been checked, so it can’t appear here. Absence from the list doesn’t mean a program lacks evening classes.

Do these programs hold every class in the evening?

Not always. Many say most courses meet in the evening, and several offer day sections too. Others meet on weekends or in occasional on-campus sessions. The schedule line in each profile shows the program’s own wording. A quick call will tell you what next fall’s schedule looks like.

Key Takeaways
  • Scheduling only: Each of the 48 programs says on its own site that classes meet in the evening or at weekends. Nothing broader is claimed.
  • Internship still needs a plan: School counseling internships generally need substantial time in K-12 schools while students are present, so ask each program how working students manage it.
  • Not part-time, not online: Evening or weekend classes don’t tell you the pace of the degree or whether courses are online. Marshall is the one program where we confirmed digital delivery through accreditation-related records.
  • Confirmed programs only: A program missing from this list may still offer evening classes. It just hasn’t been checked.
  • State rules come first: CACREP accreditation isn’t state approval, so confirm your state’s certification requirements before you enroll.

If you’re still weighing whether a master’s in school counseling is the right move, start with the degree overview. It lays out what the degree involves, what it leads to, and what to look for in a program before you apply.
