Louisiana School Counselors

Louisiana public education system is attracting many of the best educators and career changers to the school counseling career. Many wonder why this might be happening; however, the writing is on the wall.

With average salaries typically $5,000 to $10,000 more than teachers, Louisiana school counselors are compensated quite well. In addition, many are seeing the trends in public education and wishing to jump on board.

With more and more emphasis being put on assessment and accountability, school districts are being forced to dig deep and find what is truly needed to help overall student achievement. It is turning out to be what many scholars had predicted in the first place which is to have curriculum and educational programs based on student psychology and incorporating ideas of breaking down learning barriers.

Louisiana is fed up with their stagnant momentum when it comes to advancing their educational achievements. The following is a quote from a March 4th, 2008 press release regarding last year's little to no gains in educational assessements:

“What we learned this year is that we have school districts in Louisiana that are making strides, but that isn’t enough,” continued Superintendent Pastorek. “We are going to continue working with these districts that aren’t where they need to be, and to take a hard look as a state at our plans to fulfill the promises that we’ve made to our children.”

Louisiana will hopefully continue to support change resulting in more funding going in the direction of developing school counselors' student psychology expertise and to include more counselors in the development of curriculum and in the development of educational programs helping to break down learning barriers for all students.

For these reasons, Lousiana school counseling is becoming a much more attractive career by infusing many with confidence of job security in addition to the idea of simply being of greater use to those students who most need assistance.
