South Carolina School Counselors

In the past, South Carolina school counseling meant helping students apply for college and perhaps suggesting professional or technical colleges for some.

Today, the role of South Carolina school counselors has changed. With increasing emphasis on assessments and student achievement, districts and the state as a whole have been forced to see the value in school counselors' expertise with regard to student psychology.

The theory and understanding of how students need to break down various learning barriers is taking on a more prominent role in the development of curriculum and educational programs. Much of the way we are now publicizing all gains and losses in education will help to continue these much more analytical and thorough assessments of the education process.

During a January 9th, 2008 SCDOE press release, State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex comments on the recognition of 235 schools for academic excellence:

"A school that wins one of these awards is a school that is focused on kids and driven to succeed,” said State Superintendent of Education Jim Rex. “It shows what can happen when educators have high expectations for students, and when parents and community members support those educators and students.”

With the current trends in education, South Carolina school counselors stand to gain tremendously in increasing salaries, job security and respect throughout the educational community.
